When polished it is a fantastic stone for use on snuff boxes, vases and seals. The stone is widely used as a gem and for ornamental purposes. The crystal has an earthy luster with a splintery conchoidal fracture and a Mohs Hardness scale rating of 6.5-7. It can appear orbicular or brecciated and has a gravity of 2.5 to 2.9. Jasper is an opaque rock that depicts a banding or pattern based on the flow or depositional settlement of where it is mined. Specification – the act of describing or identifying something precisely, a detailed description of the design and materials used to make something. Red Jasper is commonly found and is used for gemstones and ornamentation. Another details how in 1636 the Gemmarum et Lapidum Historia noted that a woman wearing red jasper was cured from the painful chronic hemmoraging that she was inflicted with. One story is that a segment of Red Jasper was embedded on the hilt of Balmung, the legendary sword of the Norse legend Siegfried. There are some noted stories regarding red jasper. The documentation in history of picture jasper is unclear, as a result of this, as it is difficult to establish which Jasper type is being referenced through the ages. The term ‘Jasper’ refers to the spotting or speckled patterns on the stone and is used to denote a number of stones that are blessed with these pattern types. History – the past considered as a whole, the whole series of past events connected with someone or sometihing, a continuous typically chronological record of importance. Agate crystals belong to the Trigonal system. There are 7 systems and 32 classes of symmetry. Patterns can occur when the silica rich sediment or volcanic ash forms through flow and depositional occurance.Īll crystals belong to a different group according to the basis of the relationships of their axes. The common red coloured Jasper is caused bytraces of iron (lll) or hematite inclusions. It is an opaque variety of silica that contains impurities which allows for the various colour forms dependant on the sediment or ash. Jasper is a amalgam of micro quartz with other mineral phases that can include chalcedony. Origin – the place or situation from which something comes, the beginning of something’s existence, the point from which it starts out, the thing from which it is ultimately derived. For example, the familiar term red marble, actually a type of limestone, is listed here as red “marble.” Most of the stone identifications in this catalogue are based on visual inspection, often from photographs. Therefore, we have identified these inaccurate identifications by setting off the terms “marble” and “jasper” in quotation marks. The terms marble and jasper are often used for stones that are not true marbles or true jaspers. We have attempted to identify the stone supports with geological accuracy while still using terms familiar to most readers. Europe’s stone industry, both ancient and modern, has often used a variety of terms for the same rocks, resulting in a rich but sometimes bewildering array of names. Any rock may be buried, heated, and deformed by crustal movements resulting in the third type-metamorphic rock. Sedimentary rocks tend to form nice layers on the seafloor or at the earth’s surface, usually consisting of sand, mud, calcium carbonate, or salts. Igneous rocks solidify from hot molten material, either deep underground or at the surface through a volcano. Stones-or rocks, as geologists refer to them-are aggregates of minerals and can usually be assigned to one of three broad types based on their natural origins.
